If you are attempting to use a regular Controller (Xbox 360, Xbox One, etc.), your best bet is to open Steam in Big Picture Mode, which is accessible in the Top Right Corner of Steam, it has arrows pointing into the top right and bottom left corners, and is next to minimize / expand / close. Steam, the popular storefront and game launcher, has released a new update that allows to use the PS4 DualShock controller on your PC when running the application which works instantly with most games on the platform and features the same insane amount of custom configuration options. Once this change is finished, the game will no longer be able to (randomly) make itself unplayable by setting up as if it were using a Steam Controller (which prevents use of Keyboard OR Gamepad). After this, assuming all visual settings are set-up to your preference, save and exit that file, right click it, go to properties, and choose 'read only' at the bottom.
